The Brunch Dish: Ham and Gruyere Sandwich at 606 R&D

In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

I love me a good breakfast sandwich—especially when it's a block from my place. The ham and gruyere breakfast sandwich ($12) at 606 R&D in Prospect Heights is priced as you'd expect on a brunch menu, rather than a breakfast one, but it's available seven days a week. Still, even if it's a little pricey for an everyday breakfast, it's one I'm happy to know is available whenever I want it. (Pro tip: If you're doing breakfast for two, split this super-rich sandwich and a few of their fresh doughnuts. Savory and sweet in one go, and it brings the average cost down too.)

It starts with a flat egg scramble, neatly tucked in, on a buttery bun that also cradles ham and Gruyere. Hardly a novel combination, but there's a reason the two ingredients are so often paired. Next to that pile of steaming hot eggs, the Gruyere is melty and oozing, so fragrant you can smell it coming to the table before you see it. All the elements fuse together on that soft bun, making for a sandwich as refined as it is classic.
