Monogamy is a Myth : The Wise Directory

April 4, 2012 · Posted in Dating

We are made to believe that in order to be utterly happy, we need to find The One, Only One Special Someone. But I have news for you. The inability to be monogamous isn’t just a metter of excess hormones or vanity. People, women and men are polygamous. There’s a research on genetic configuration found all animals. Paternity tests given to birds, monkeys and foxes revealed that despite developing a social relationship akin to marriage, these species did not necessarily remained faithful to each other.

In seventy percent of cases, their offspring turn out to be fathered by males other than their partners. David Barash, professor fo psychology at University of Washington in Seattle said that the only species in nature that does not commit adultery and it seems a hundred percent monogamy is the flatworm. Yes that is just right, a flatworm, scientific name: Diplozoon paradoxum. The male and female worm meet during adolescent stage and their bodies literally fuse together.

So when you found out your partner is unfaithful, here’s a proof why it’s hard to be faithful. We were brought up by fairytales, believing in the unnatural social conventions that we can only love one. We feel guilty if we feel something romantic for another.

Being monogamous is a social convention when marriage was institutionalized; when borders between countries were kept to have social order in place. But humans, being part of the kingdom Animalia, we transgress. We misbehave.

But one thing that is crucial here is: how much we are willing to give up for The One? Will you go into to our ‘animal instincts’ or have we decided we can go on with life and One is enough? Are you willing to commit that promise? After all, the most critical component of successful relationship is Commitment.
