Striped Quilt « Cheap Crafty Mama

Striped Quilt

Since we will soon have a new little one moving into our nursery, I have been working on making our spare bedroom into a fun “big boy room” for my son.  I decided to work on it now while I still have energy and feel good.  We debated a lot about what kind of bed to use (any advice about getting a 22-ish month old to sleep in a bed is much appreciated) and decided to keep the antique full-sized bed in his room so I wanted to make a cute boyish quilt for him!

I have to warn you that I am not a quilter but I thought this would be a fun challenge for me!  As usual, I took a few short-cuts to save some time and money!

Materials:

sewing machine

iron

full-sized fusible quilt batting (81″x96″)

cobalt blue thread

(2) 100″ pieces of cobalt blue fabric

85″ of each of these fabrics:

orange plaid

aqua plaid

solid brown

solid cobalt blue

light green with brown spots

Before I started cutting and sewing, I washed and dried all the fabric.  Then I I used a yard stick and marker to draw lines on the fabric and then cut out strips in a variety of widths (I just cut strips out of the fabrics that were 85″ long).

Next I started sewing the strips together.  I would lay strips 2 front-side to front-side and sew a 1/4″ seam along the edge.  Then choose the next piece of fabric and sew it to the edge of one of the previous pieces.

Once I had enough strips sewn together that it was 96″ long, I turned it over and ironed the backside so the seams would lay flat.

When I was done with the front-side of the quilt, I got to work on the piece for the back-side.  I sewed the 2 100″ pieces of the cobalt blue fabric together and ironed the seam flat.

Next, I laid out the front-side of the quilt on the ground, with the seam-side facing up.  You can notice that the edge is uneven, this is because some of the fabrics shrunk more than others when I washed and dried them.

I laid the fusible batting on top of the fabric and pinned it in place.

Then I ironed the fabric so that the batting would fuse to it.

Once they were fused together, I trimmed off the excess fabric around the edges.

Next I laid out the blue quilt backing on the ground, with the front-side facing down.  I laid the top part of the quilt on top, with the front-side facing up, and pinned them together and then ironed them (I turned it over and ironed on the blue side) so the 3 layers would fuse together.

Then I trimmed off the extra blue around the edges, leaving a 2″ border all the way around.

I folded the blue fabric over 1″ and ironed it, then folded it over 1″ again and ironed that, so I had a 1″ blue border around the front edge of the quilt.  Then I sewed 1/8″ from the inside edge of the blue to create the edge of the quilt.

To finish the quilt, I sewed along the seams where each of the stripes joined together.

That part got pretty tricky because I had to fit the bulk of the quilt through the sewing machine.  I found that it helped if I rolled up the part of the quilt that was going to be fed through the sewing machine.

When it was done I washed it because it had all kinds of little thread clippings (and dog hairs) all over it.

I’m so happy with how it turned out!  I like it a lot better than anything I could find online and I was able to save $ by making it myself!

I had some extra fabric left over so I made pillow shams and bunting curtains!

You should already know at least a little bit about babies. You understand that babies do not recognize most people right away. Most babies are able to recognize their mothers immediately after being born, but you already knew that. Most people understand that each baby will develop at his or her own pace. Development milestones happen when they happen-how a baby grows up is not an exact science. The truth is, however that there are lots of things about a child’s development that most people do not know. Infancy is a fascinating period in human development. Between conception and toddlerhood is an incredibly exciting time. Even though it doesn’t look that complicated the truth is that growing up is fraught with challenges and changes!

Did you know that babies are born with three hundred bones in their bodies? After a person finishes growing up he or she only has two hundred and six bones. You do not lose any bones as you grow up; the reason an adult has fewer bones than a baby is because as the baby grows some of his bones fuse together. Many believe that this is one of the main reasons that a baby is so much more flexible physically as an adult-because the bones are able to move independently of one another in infancy. If you stop to think about it, it does make some sense: when was the last time you could put your feet in your mouth?

Odd as it might sound, some babies come out with some teeth already in place! Other babies don’t start getting their teeth in until well after their first birthdays.

Teething is a process that many parents fear more than they look forward to seeing. There is no reason to fret if your child starts teething earlier or later than his peers. Each baby is different and develops at his or her own pace so, even though you might have had three kids who started teething at six months, that doesn’t mean that your newest baby will start at that time.

While crying is the baby’s main way of signaling that he or she needs or wants something, there won’t be any tears with that wail until a few weeks after he has been born. When a person gets stressed he or she secretes a hormone that is only found in tears. This is one of the reasons people cry when they are stressed-the tears release the hormones which calms the body down. Babies do not produce these hormones before birth. The stress hormone does not usually start to show up until the baby has been out of the womb for at least a few weeks. It takes other babies a few months to begin producing the hormone and crying real tears.

There are plenty of developmental facts about babies that few people know. Ironically, the more information an adult has on a subject the more patience he or she usually has for it when faced with it.

Baby Facts You Should Know | Crazy Ass Truck Driver

Many people assume that babies are only about diapers, breast milk (or formula) and long naps. But do you know why babies move the way they do? Have you been taught why a baby grows in certain ways at certain times? Most of us don’t worry about the minutiae of infant development. For people who are interested in becoming parents, however, baby and early childhood development is a fascinating subject.

Babies are full of surprises! Believe it or not the things you think you know about babies might be completely false! Here are some interesting facts about infant development.

At birth a baby’s skull has yet to fuse together. This is why it is so important for adults to be careful when handling a newborn’s head. Serious damage could be done to your child’s development if you are not careful when handling his or her head-be careful of that soft spot! After about three months or so, the plates start to come together and fuse and the soft spot isn’t as sensitive. You do still need to be careful though because it can take up to eighteen months for the frontal parts of the skull to calcify and harden. Even while a baby is in the womb he can hear sounds, but you already know that. Many sounds cause babies to have strong reactions-reactions that have been recorded before the baby is born. Did you know that a fetus’s ears are just as sensitive to varying decibel levels as those of an infant? The ears of an unborn infant are extremely sensitive. Doctors recommend that, while women are pregnant that they keep their music, televisions, etc below the level of a modern vacuum cleaner. If you must listen to loud music, wear headphones as this will cut down on the noise inflicted on your baby considerably-some doctors even think that vacuum cleaners are too loud so keep the noise to a dull roar as much as you can.

Your doctor will tell you to stay away from fish because it contains mercury but there are fish that are mercury free and they can be quite good for you. Eating salmon while you are pregnant is good because salmon is chock full of healthy nutrients for you and your baby and it does not contain mercury the way other types of fish do. Some think if a woman eats fish while she is pregnant that she will improve her baby’s brain function and that her child will develop better communication skills than a baby born to a mother who did not consume fish while she was pregnant. Of course this has yet to be scientifically proven so, if you do not particularly like salmon, don’t lose sleep over this.

There are all sorts of great and interesting facts about babies that are not common knowledge. Everybody knows that babies grow up at an alarming rate. Thin-Film Solar

Solar cells made from cheap nanocrystal-based inks have the potential to be as efficient as the conventional inorganic cells currently used in solar panels, but can be printed less expensively. Solexant, a company in San Jose, CA, is currently manufacturing solar cells to test the technology. In order to compete with other thin-film solar companies, Solexant is banking on simpler, cheaper printing processes and materials, as well as lower initial capital costs to build its plants. The company expects to sell modules for $1 per watt, with efficiencies above 10 percent.

The company has licensed methods for growing nanocrystals and making them into inks from Paul Alivisatos, professor of nanotechnology at the University of California, Berkeley and interim director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. (Alivisatos is on Solexant's board of directors.) Alivisatos says the advantage of these materials is their potential to combine low cost with high performance. Solar cells made from crystalline silicon are efficient at converting sunlight into electricity, but they're expensive to manufacture. To bring down the cost, companies have been developing thin-film solar cells from semiconductors that don't match crystalline silicon's performance but are much less expensive to make.

Solexant's goal is to make cheap thin-film solar cells with relatively high efficiencies. It would not disclose what the nanoparticle inks are made of, but the company says they are suspensions of rod-shaped, semiconducting nanocrystals that are four nanometers in diameter and 20 to 30 nanometers long. The Solexant cells are printed on a metal foil as the substrate. Nanocrystal films are simple to print but have poor electrical properties. Electrons tend to get trapped between the small particles. "The trick with these cells is how to deposit the materials on the fly in a way that makes a very conductive surface," which in turn ensures decent light-to-electricity conversion, says Alivisatos. Solexant begins with nanocrystals because they're easier to print, and heats them as they're printed, causing them to fuse together into larger, high-quality microcrystals that don't have as many places for electrons to lose their way.

The remaining parts of the solar cell, including the electrical contacts and a light-absorbing layer, are also printed on the flexible metal films. This process allows Solexant to print very large areas. When complete, the cells are cut and then topped with a rigid piece of glass.

Making the entire cell using a roll-to-roll process gives the company an advantage over other thin-film photovoltaic companies that print on glass, which is heavier and limited to smaller areas, says Solexant CEODamoder Reddy. "The cost benefit is dramatic, allowing us to produce cells for 50 cents a watt," he says. First Solar, a thin-film company that uses vacuum deposition to print its cells onto glass, has manufacturing costs of 85 cents per watt. Nanosolar, another company making nanocrystal solar cells, uses a different semiconductor that requires chemical reactions to take place during printing, which increases the complexity and expense of the process. "We print a preformed semiconductor," which eliminates such steps, says Reddy.

Solexant has raised $22.5 million in venture funding to build its two-megawatt pilot plant, and is seeking $40 million more over the next year to build a 100-megawatt facility. Solar startups typically seek about $250 million in capital to build such a plant, says Reddy.

The company's first product, which Reddy says will sell for $1 per watt next year, will contain a single layer of the nanocrystals. The company is currently developing other types of nanocrystals that are more responsive to different bands of the solar spectrum in the hopes of boosting its cells' efficiency. "Ultimately we want to make a multilayer, broad-spectrum cell," says Reddy.

Treating Shoulder Fractures

When treating a shoulder fracture, the bone must be realigned before the bones start to knit together. Medical professionals therefore need to ensure treatment is not delayed, or a patient may fail to make a full recovery.

The Need for Prompt Treatment.

When a shoulder fracture occurs, it will start to heal immediately and will continue to do so for the next two weeks. During that time, the shoulder can be externally manipulated, making it much easier to realign the fracture. It is also much less likely that invasive treatment such as surgery will be required.

This notion of a time limit must be respected by health professionals, who need to ensure the bone is properly realigned without too much of a delay. Otherwise the fracture will fuse together in the wrong position. Any alteration in the anatomical alignment of the bones will prevent a patient from regaining full shoulder function. He/she may be left with a weakness, reduced range of movement or on-going discomfort. Thus to prevent long-term damage, it is important shoulder fractures are treated as quickly as possible.

The course of treatment must also be discussed with the patient. Some may not wish to have surgery, particularly if they are old and frail. In such cases, a more conservative treatment plan can be devised. On the other hand, younger patients may take a different view and be prepared to undergo an operation if necessary.

What if there is a Delay?

Generally speaking, a surgeon has up to three weeks to realign a fracture. Any longer than this and shoulder function could be compromised. This is because if a shoulder fracture is left untreated for two weeks, the bone will start to glue itself back together. From three to six weeks, it is still easily to prize apart, although surgery will probably be necessary.

After six weeks, the fracture will have united to such an extent that the only way to realign the fracture is to re-fracture it. This will obviously cause additional pain to the patient, who must endure an operation and another fracture injury. Even after surgery, a patient may never return to their former state of health, and he/she must live with permanent shoulder damage.
