You probably think that babies are only good for sleeping, eating and using dozens of diapers a day. Do you understand how a baby moves? Have you figured out the secret to infant development? Most of us don’t worry about the minutiae of infant development. For others though, the subject of infant and early childhood development is something that they make the time to learn about.

Every day is a surprise when you have a baby! Whether or not you are ready to know this, at least fifty percent of what you think you know about babies is wrong. This article will teach you a few things about babies that you probably do not already know.

A baby is not born with a solid skull. This is one of the main reasons that adults need to be careful when they are holding newborn babies. If you are not careful when you are handling your baby’s head, you could accidentally do quite a bit of damage so tread lightly and carefully when you hold your newborn! About three months after your baby is born its skull plates will have started to fuse together and you won’t have to be quite so careful with the soft spot at the back of his or her head. You do still need to be careful though because it can take up to eighteen months for the frontal parts of the skull to calcify and harden. It is common knowledge that babies can hear while they are still inside of their mothers. Many sounds cause babies to have strong reactions-reactions that have been recorded before the baby is born. The ears of an infant are sensitive to different decibel levels of sound-both inside of and outside of the womb. The ears of an unborn infant are extremely sensitive. Most doctors agree that while a woman is pregnant and that while her baby is still young that she keeps all of the sounds in her house to levels quieter than her vacuum cleaner. If you must listen to loud music, wear headphones as this will cut down on the noise inflicted on your baby considerably-some doctors even think that vacuum cleaners are too loud so keep the noise to a dull roar as much as you can.

Even though you want to avoid mercury, you can still have fish-just make sure it is a mercury free species! Many doctors recommend eating salmon regularly because it does not contain mercury the way other fish do and because it contains all sorts of healthy things that a mother needs for her growing fetus. There are experts out there who believe that eating fish while she is pregnant can help a mother improve the function of her baby’s brain and that will help her child develop superior communication skills later in life-more so than those children born to mothers who did not eat fish. Of course this has yet to be scientifically proven so, if you do not particularly like salmon, don’t lose sleep over this.

There are all sorts of great and interesting facts about babies that are not common knowledge. It is common knowledge just how quickly an infant develops. Have you learned the exact process by which a baby matures? Do you know all of the stages between birth and adulthood? Your knowledge of babies is already expanding-don’t you want to learn more about this fascinating subject?
