Science in Primary School | Education and Online Program

Date: 5 Jan 2012 Comments: 0

Science explains many aspects of life and can be the answer to many of your children’s questions such as what is the moon made of and why is it cold at Christmas time. Teaching children basic science skills aged 5 to 7 will set them up for when it becomes split into the three different area types in secondary school.

Learning about the planet and the creatures in it will all be covered in the early years of science, finding out about different plants, animals and forest life in general will be the topics they learn about in biology. In their version of physics they will learn about forces, sound and pitch, light and more. They do not seem to cover a lot of chemistry subjects at this young age and I can understand why! Chemistry was definitely the most confusing science topic at school for me, learning the different symbols of the periodic table and which atoms fuse together to create new compounds went over my head slightly!

Science gives primary schools the most opportunity to venture outside the classroom to learn different aspects of the subject. I do not have the best memory of my younger days but some memories that stick in my head are going out to muddy fields learning which way is north and researching the different plants and animals. The best way of learning science is carrying out experiments and seeing the changes that occur or watching a smaller scale demonstration than just reading a book.

Science could be a risky subject if handled incorrectly due to people’s religious beliefs. Some people today think that teaching science to young age groups is like brainwashing them as they are teaching them about evolution. Science means knowledge so when we learn this subject we are learning about what we know in the world and looking at the evidence of how it came about and objects we can learn about. One thing that we will never have full evidence of is how the Earth came about so this is just completely down to what you believe in and should be left out of discussions.

Science is amongst one of the most popular subjects that people take up at college and go onto study at university, if your child is interested in science from a young age this can be great as scientific jobs can be very well paid and within the three areas of science they branch off into a variety of different kinds of jobs for example physics is a must have when learning games design and chemistry is important if you want become a chemist in a pharmacy.
