It’s a fair assumption that you already know some things about babies. You understand that babies do not recognize most people right away. Most babies are able to recognize their mothers immediately after being born, but you already knew that. You already understand that no two babies are going to develop at the same exact rate. Baby’s do not follow a pre-set schedule for milestones. There is so much more to know about babies and how they develop and grow! Human development is fascinating but infancy is mesmerizing. The number of things that happen between conception and a baby’s first complete sentence would astonish you. Those little bodies might look like they can’t accomplish much but the fact is that those babies are working really hard to grow up!
Did you already know that there are three hundred bones in an infant’s body? There are only two hundred and six bones in an adult’s body. While this might sound like your body absorbs your bones as you grow up, the reality is that some of your bones simply fuse together. Many adults believe that it is the fusing of the bones that causes them to lose their flexibility-they believe that the individual bones gave them better ranges of motions. Think about it: how often are you able to eat your own feet as a grown up?
Your baby, in spite of not being able to talk right away, will amaze you with the range of sounds that he or she can make almost as soon as he or she is born. A baby’s larynx is still being “finished” after he is born, which is why it is so flexible and has such a range. This is one of the reasons that babies can make more sounds than adults. It doesn’t take long for a baby to learn how to assign a sound to an object or idea. This is what teaches a mother to identify what it is her baby needs or wants simply by listening to the sounds he is making. Typically, most of a baby’s beginning vocabulary will consist of easy vowels and consonants that he can make using only the front of his mouth. “Dada” is usually a first word because it is easier for the baby to say than “mama” and it is almost always an accident!
Everybody knows that babies use crying to communicate their need for service or attention but did you know that the baby does not cry real tears until he or she is almost a month old? When a person gets stressed he or she secretes a hormone that is only found in tears. In order to calm down when you are stressed, your body does everything it can to get rid of the hormones the stress has created-which is why you cry (your body is literally shedding the hormone). This hormone is not one that gets created while the baby is in the womb. Sometimes real tears take a few weeks to show up because it takes the baby a while to begin producing the stress hormone. Some babies won’t produce the hormone for a few months.
There is lots of baby knowledge out there that is not well known. Oddly, many adults are better able to approach a situation calmly if they have a lot of knowledge on the subject at hand.
You will feel better about your parenting skills if you learn everything you can about babies. Go to it!
