Ulster Tatler Magazine is Northern Ireland's No.1 social Magazine showcasing all what's hot and what's not around the province!
Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) is calling for participants to take up the challenge of a lifetime and join their latest overseas adventure – to the top of Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro.
The Kilimanjaro Trek, taking place from 15th – 26th October, gives each participant an amazing experience at the same time as raising vital funds to help and support cancer patients in Northern Ireland.
Emma Woods, a previous UCF Kilimanjaro participant says, “In a monotonous world, where it’s easier just to flow along with the current, there are few moments that tattoo in your memories. For me, making a small decision to join the 2010 UCF team and climb Kilimanjaro has left me with vivid images I will never forget. From the outset the experience enabled me to make a difference by raising money for an essential local charity.
“The fundraising process in itself was extremely rewarding and enjoyable; encouraging friends; colleagues and family to fuse together and donate to a cause which will ultimately affect all of us at some stage in our lives.
“As for the vivid images: – watching the sunset with the clouds beneath my feet; doing the hokey cokey 4,100 metres up; the long drop (!); singing ‘Tell me ma’ before our summit climb; our fantastic team reaching Uhuru Peak together and, it has to be said, you haven’t seen the stars until you’ve camped up Kilimanjaro! It truly is an amazing experience – get it done!”
Sarah Atcheson, Fundraising Co-ordinator, says “The Kilimanjaro Trek is one of our most challenging treks to date with participants walking many hours each day, in high altitudes, to help raise funds for local people affected by cancer. “There is no doubt that this is an extraordinary and rewarding experience which requires determination and commitment to conquer!”
The trek is organised by Outdoor Concepts, which co-ordinates all the charity’s outdoor sporting events. Craig McCullough, owner of Outdoor Concepts who has led treks around the world said, “At 5,896m, Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing mountain in the world and it is the dream of many people to stand on the roof of Africa. We climb the less travelled Machame Route which gives trekkers amazing views and, as it is slightly longer than other routes, it allows greater time for acclimatisation.
“Climbing Kilimanjaro is not to be under estimated – it is tough – physically, mentally and emotionally. In 2010 we had a great group of people on the trek raising money for the Ulster Cancer Foundation and the encouragement and support they gave each other enabled everyone to reach the summit.”
Everyone who participates in this trek is asked to raise a minimum of £4,150 and anyone interested in further information should contact Sarah Atcheson on sarahatcheson@ulstercancer.org or tel. 028 9068 0765.
