Rarely Known Baby Facts « EraNostra

Watching kids develop can fascinate you. The way babies grow from a small ball of cells into fully functioning human beings boggles the brains of most people. There is more to being a baby than is immediately discernable. There is more to being a baby than simply being cute. Babies have very specific needs that must be met or they will not grow up properly. There is nothing simple about infancy and early childhood. Being a parent is easier if you understand what is going on as your child grows from baby to small kid to teenager and onward.

Babies have three hundred bones in their bodies when they are born. By the time a person reaches adulthood there are only two hundred and six bones in the body. Contrary to how this sounds, you never actually lose bones-some of the individual bones that you are born with simply fuse together to form single bones. It is a commonly held belief that the fusing of the bones is what causes adults to lose some of their flexibility-because the individual bones can no longer move independently of each other. There is some logic to this-after all, when was the last time you could put your feet behind your head? You probably already knew that fetuses are able to hear sounds while they are still in the womb. Many studies have been done to prove that sounds can carry through a mother’s body and that a baby can react strongly to the sounds he hears. It does not matter when the baby is born, his ears are still very sensitive to high decibel levels of sound while he is in the womb. Even before the baby is birthed, his ears are very sensitive. Doctors recommend that, while women are pregnant that they keep their music, televisions, etc below the level of a modern vacuum cleaner. Even your vacuum cleaner pushes the limits of your baby’s comfort so you will want to keep the noise level in your home down and avoid loud noises outside as well.

Did you know that when babies grow tails? It’s a fact! As your baby’s cells divide, the major organs (heart, lungs, brain) begin to form and so does a tail!

While the rest of the baby’s vital organs continue to develop after birth, the tail has usually long since disappeared into the rest of the baby’s body by the time it is born. The process is sort of like the way a tadpole’s tail gets swallowed up by the body of the frog. There are some people whose tails never get completely absorbed and are born with a tail still in place. There are two options available to you if your baby is born with his tail still intact: waiting and hoping that it goes away or having it removed via surgery. The only risks associated with having the tail removed are those that are present with any surgery but, for the most part, your baby should be fine because the tail does not impact your child’s overall health.

There are all sorts of great and interesting facts about babies that are not common knowledge. You already know how fast babies grow up. Do you understand the minutiae of how a baby grows up? Has anybody told you just how many changes occur between when your baby is conceived and when he or she has a baby of his or her own? Your knowledge of babies is already expanding-don’t you want to learn more about this fascinating subject?
