PATTERN ME PRETTY: Mixing Prints

The big rule in fashion these days it seems is that there are no rules.

In the past few seasons of our increasing color-blocked world we’ve seen shades like magenta and red fuse together to become a favorite couple, sharply studded spikes embellish the heels of otherwise lady-like stilettos and glitter and sequins become a daytime favorite for even the most cultured of stylites.

With that being said, now’s a better time than ever to embrace the print trend headed our way for 2012. Apparent all over the runways from designers like Tory Burch, Suno and Giambattista Valli, unlikely color patterns in never before seen shapes and sizes worked together side by side, in unexpected layers and even together in the same piece.

The best thing about this trend is that it extends into shoes. Don’t save a great tribal patterned wedge for a boring neutral outfit. Instead, mix and match (or don’t match) with some of the season’s greatest printed pieces.

Bottom line: Leopard shoes with a floral outfit is a do. The crazier the better. —LAUREN DOYLE
