To be fair, and in the interest of full disclosure, for being such a fan of Mouse on Mars, my exposure to the all-over-the-map German technocrats Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma is relatively new, like, weeks new, just hopped on the bandwagon new. I have read the name Mouse on Mars on different blogs and in magazines for years; many, many years, as it turns out, because the duo has been making music for the better part of two decades (their debut, Vulvaland, was released in 1994). The band’s name evoked an image of stark, alien isolation, and evoked a kinda creepiness, like it would be a little chilly for this bred-on-indie and pop kid, as I assumed they plied in ambience and drizzly electro-atmospherics. Which is not to say they never do, but a few books I prematurely judged by their covers later (1997’s Instrumentals and 2001’s Idiology, in particular) and I counted myself as a MoM partisan, no looking back.

What really impresses most about Mouse on Mars’ discography, is their plurality, leaving damn little off limits, keeping in mind, that before Parastrophics, I had really sorted through (read; listened through multiple times) maybe two, two and a half MoM records, coming away shocked and impressed at the density and sheer mass the band fuse together, often on one track, not to mention on any entire, given long-player.

Parastrophics, then, continues this traditionless tradition. Like America’s own Flying Lotus’ avant-garde hip-hop, Mouse on Mars transcend meaningless labels like IDM or post-techno (barf!), and make some serious and seriously heavy pop music, with nearly limitless technological tools and easy-handed craftsmanship. There are the heavy bangers on the album (‘Metrotopy’, ‘Polaroyced’), as well as left field abstractions like ‘Chordblocker, Cinnamon Toasted’, an especially vertiginous track, that could seemingly induce inner ear spasms if not full-on nausea, under the right conditions; with its thunderous, buzzy lower end- no small feat, and not a criticism, by the way. What really matters, is that Mouse on Mars, on Parastrophics, never fail to blur the line that so easily divides commerce and entertainment from art. The album’s fluid grace and powerful virtue has kept me awake and alert enough over the last week or so of listens to prevent me from kachunking head first into my keyboard at work, drooling into the collection of chip crumbs and dust mites that no doubt rule the intersections between the keys. Parastrophics, to its unending credit, stimulates the synapses in the best possible way, and will no doubt grace the single digits of many year-end lists, mine included.

3. Laminectomies:

In cases of spinal stenosis or disc herniation, surgical removal of the intervertebral disc can be performed to relieve the pressure on the nerves. The severity of the condition as well as the general health status of the patient are key factors in establishing the recovery time, which may be range from 8 weeks to 6 months. Single interspace laminectomy is a risk factor for poor outcome [4]. Recurrent laminectomies can be safely performed for repeated disc herniation[5].

4. Removal of Tumors:

The approach to spinal tumors depends on the type, stage and involvement of the spinal structure by the tumor. Omega 3 Fatty Acid - DHA Is Crucial For Male Fertility

Male fertility depends on sperm-cell architecture. A University of Illinois study reports that the specific omega-3 fatty acid (DHA) is necessary to construct the immature sperm cell into a properly-formed "pointy-headed super swimmer" with an extra long tail for effective motility.

"Normal sperm cells contain an arc-like structure called the acrosome that is critical in fertilization because it houses, organizes, and concentrates a variety of enzymes that sperm use to penetrate an egg," explained Manabu Nakamura, a University of Illinois associate professor of biochemical and molecular nutrition.

The study shows for the first time that docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is essential in fusing
the building blocks of the acrosome together. "Without DHA, this vital structure doesn't
form and sperm cells don't work," said co-researchers conducting the study.

Men concerned about their fertility may want to increase their intake of foods containing DHA. Fish Sources Omega 3
Most often recommended are omega 3-rich fish, such as salmon, mackeral, trout or tuna, known
as excellent sources of this omega-3 fatty acid.

The scientists became intrigued with DHA's role in creating healthy sperm when they experimented with laboratory subjects that lack a gene essential to its synthesis. "We looked at sperm count, shape, and motility, and tested the breeding success rate. The male mice that lacked DHA were basically infertile," they said.

But when DHA was introduced into the subject's diet, fertility was completely restored. "It
was very striking. When we fed the DHA, all these abnormalities were prevented," they added.

The scientists then used confocal laser scanning (3D) microscopy to look at thin slices of tissue in progressive stages of a sperm cell's development. By labeling enzymes with fluorescence, they could track their location in a cell.

"We could see that the acrosome is constructed when small vesicles containing enzymes fuse together in an arc. But that fusion doesn't happen without DHA," they emphasized. In the absence of DHA, the vesicles are formed but they don't come together to make the arch that is so important in sperm cell structure.

The role this omega-3 fatty acid plays in membrane fusion is particularly exciting,
according to the researchers. Because DHA
is abundant in specific tissues, including the
brain and the retina as well as the testes,
the scientists believe their research findings
could also impact research relating to brain function and vision.

"It's logical to hypothesize that DHA is involved
in vesicle fusion elsewhere in the body, and
because the brain contains so much of it, we wonder if deficiencies could play a role, for
example, in the development of dementia.
Any communication between neurons in the
brain involves vesicle fusion," they noted.

The Illinois research scientists will continue to study sperm; other laboratories are now studying DHA function in the brain and the retina.

Ever since the dystopian genre has taken off, I've gone off it a bit. The books started feeling like any old concept was grabbed on to and the worlds weren't very thought out or believable. What made The Hunger Games work in my opinion, is that Suzanne Collins tapped into serious issues our society has and showed us their extreme. (and a lot of other stuff, too, but that's a biggie) Even some of the more popular books that have come out over the last couple of years have just not worked for me. So I always feel a little..conflicted when starting a new dystopian, I'm never sure if I'll like it or not.

Also, books that sell huge at auction never seem to quite live up to the hype (has anyone else noticed this?) so Pure was both this book I really really wanted to read and also was a little scared to read. Oh one final thing (don't you love long stories about how I came to read this book?) Julianna Baggott is a Catholic author, a little tidbit I know thanks to Image Journal! Writers who have faith always intrigue me, I kind of prioritize their books.

So...to be honest, I've had the ARC since Comic-Con when Florinda was kind enough to give it to me, but what actually pushed me into reading it (considering I barely read anything last year) was Jill's review. Thankfully, I was hooked from the prologue. I mean when does that ever happen? Rarely, that's when.

What I really like about Baggott's writing is how just lovely it is, it's pretty and true. The things she writes sort of create this feeling of either...aching longing or "yes that's true" inside of me. And I like that. It's effective.

Pure is about a world where an atomic bomb has gone off and ruined everything, only it wasn't any old bomb, it was a bomb that had properties that made things fuse together, so all the people on the outside were actually fused together with things in the world around them. I mean, so much so that those things became a part of them. Our heroine, Pressia, was holding a doll at the time and that doll's head actually became her hand. Some people have animals fused to them, or glass, or other things. And some people actually become a part of the earth and lose all the essential parts of what makes them human and become monstrous, feeding on other humans.

But...there's also this place called the dome. The people who live in the dome are not fused to the earth, they are pure. The people outside of the dome are "wretches." The people in the dome were prepared for the destruction of the earth and have things saved up but are also working on even more technology to advance the world. Our hero, Partridge, lives in the dome. But Partridge misses his mother, who didn't survive the blast, and devises a way to escape the dome and look for her.

So it's possible that Pressia and Partridge's paths meet. But I don't call them hero and heroine in any romantic sense, they are just the main characters.

So Pressia is at a very vulnerable stage in life where she's about to get called up to the OSR which is the resistance army. The OSR kills anyone that's useless and she thinks she'll be useless because of her hand. So she tries to escape, but it's possible the OSR has bigger plans for her, and that there's a lot of stuff she doesn't know or understand about the bomb and why the world is the way it is.

I loved little things about this world, like the way their memories of the life before, their stories were the most precious currency they had. A sign of trust was to tell someone your story. I loved that so much, because you know, that's how I feel in life, like when we impart our stories to one another we are sharing the truest parts of who we are. More important than money, or goods, or time. The entire world felt very authentic to me, I could easily visualize it, I didn't have any real questions about it, so in that sense it was very successful.

I also like that this is basically a story about an atomic bomb. I went to both peace museums in Japan, the one in Hiroshima and the one in Nagasaki, they were life changing. And it always grates on me that our World War II stories are so European focused, and that really amazing and excellent books about the bombs in Japan don't get the attention they deserve, such as Rahna Reiko Rizzuto's Hiroshima in the Morning. But Pure while fictional, is going to call to mind the bombs in Japan. I mean the bombs are referenced, but there's also the fact that the heroine is Japanese-American.

And there are ideas in this book, about purity and sacrifice, and the scars we bear and what they mean. There's more reflection on the possibility of God and hope and faith than in most dystopians I read, and strangely it actually called Canticle of Liebowitz to mind in a few different ways. There are a lot of interesting stops along the way in this book and I think it would reward rereading to further explore its depths.

Pure is without doubt the most successful dystopian I've read in a very long time. I look forward to the sequel!

The Ido story begins in Korea, where potters made these rustic bowls for everyday use. Many say they were intended as rice bowls. The wheel-thrown shapes were rough; often uneven or showing finger marks.

Another sign of their humble beginnings are the wads of clay in the center of the bowl. This technique was used to stack several tea bowls together in order to fire a larger load, without allowing the glaze on the piled bowls to fuse together.

It is not clear when this style of pottery first became known in Japan, but by the time of Sen no Rikyu and his disciples, the bowls were touted as among the purest expression of their wabi esthetic, and highly prized by both the tea men and their clients.

There were other types of Korai (Korean) bowls imported by the Japanese chajin, but Yamanoue Soji is credited with identifying the Ido bowl as the best among them. He even selected an Ido chawan for the collection of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Another disciple of Rikyu, Oribe Furuta, sought inspiration from this pottery in order to infuse more of their wabi character into his own chawan designs.

Looking to get even closer to this ideal, he sought to understand the construction of the Korean climbing kilns, and recreate them in Japan.

Due to the rising popularity of the style, Japanese began making commissions to Korean potters or sending their own designs for teabowls to be fired in the climbing kilns. Unfortunately, with the chajin in service of the war thirsty Hideyoshi, this voluntary trade soon turned very bloody for the Koreans.

Hideyoshi had deluded himself into thinking that he could capture the many riches of China, if only Korea would guarantee him safe passage through their peninsula. When the Korean envoy rejected these terms, Hideyoshi pressed on to war anyway. He never reached China, but the Japanese army razed the settlements of Korea beyond repair. As a spoils of war, they returned with dozens of Korean potters as their captives, and set them to work back in Japan.

From that point on, the nation of Japan continued to toil at extracting the wabi essence of the Ido chawan, but the original is still considered the pinnacle of the form.

The chajin struggled with the idea of creating wabi, as making something that appeared to be without intention was naturally an intention itself. Perhaps the failure to surpass the character of the Ido chawan is proof that no amount of force (of will or military conquest) is capable of coercing real beauty to appear.

I tried to impart the wabi ideal into my own tea room, but surely intention shows through somehow. Perhaps reaching for something and never quite grasping is part of what wabi is about, anyway.

Even in her artistic avatar, Sharmila has broken barriers and moved beyond typical interpretations of an ancient classical dance form. A leading performing artiste, Sharmila has packaged her dance performances in a manner capable of being assimilated by international audiences rather than only Indian audiences. In her ground breaking performances, she has been selected to essay roles as diverse as the goddess of love in and Indian classical dance version of Shakespeare’s ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and the famous courtesan Ambapali in ‘Enlightenment’ a musical English dance drama based on the 6th Century BC Indian epic story portraying the life of the famous courtesan Ambapali during the Buddha’s era.
This has led to consistent attendance at her performances over the years by packed international audiences in world class venues from Singapore and all over the world. Her audiences have included the Movers and Shakers of Singapore society and the international business community, foreign dignitaries, as well as respected spiritual leaders.
Aside from her other performances, Sharmila has also had the honour of being invited to perform in a major cultural festival in South India organized by Gurus and Masters of the Art. She was the only Odissi dancer at the festival, which was attended by an audience of seven thousand people.

Guy has performed with his orchestra all over the world to millions of fans.
